in the 1950's a new kind of sedative drug was developed; Benzodiazepines. that did not have the danger of Barbiturates, one of the first of this new drug is Diazepam (Valium), it was very useful for anxiety, pain, muscle tension and insomnia.

Valium was soon joined by similar drugs, including such commonly prescrbied medication as Alprazolam (Restoril), and Triazolam (Halcion). all these names end in "am" indicating tat they are Benzodiazipines.
Flunitrazepam (Rohypnoll) is an unusually potent Benzodiazepine with a very rapid onset.

All Benzodiazepine drugs cause muscle relaxation and forgetfulness. For both of these, Rohypnoll is extremely potent, with effects about ten times stronger than Valium. It can cause paralysis or unconsciousness, and short-term amnesia, such that the user has no memory of what happened in thepast few hours. In some  countries, it is often called La Rocha, ater the manufacturer.

"Date-rape" pill typically involves taking advantage of a partner who is drunk and has weakened imhibition or judgement, or is too intoxicated to fight back. Flunitrazepam is especially effective in date rape. a tiny amount can disappear in a drink without affecting the taste. 2mg of Rohypnoll is the standard dose, and is equivalent to 20mg of Valium. enough to put most people into a dreamy stupor.

Rapists learned that it was the perfect drug to use to take advantage of an unwilling partner: there was no resistance  and no memory of what happened.

THE USERS OF FLUNITRAZEPAM

not only criminals use Rohypnol, in Spain and Malaysia, addicts use flunitrazapam to relieve withdrawal symptoms from other drugs, or as a "parachute" remedy for the depression that follows a stimulant high. Rohypnol is a party drug, a cheap easy method of getting intoxicated without the side effect of alcohol.
